When Siboney was growing up, her mom would always flip the rules for Musical Chairs whenever they played: Each round, a chair was taken away, but when the music stopped, the goal wasn’t to save yourself. The goal was to use the available chairs to make sure everyone had a place to sit.
To win, you had to get creative, building new chairs with arms and legs and backs. Working together, everyone could find a place.
Siboney grew up in Southtown in a family that also had deep ties to the Westside. Her parents were community-focused, and the house was always full of people and food and dancing.
Siboney was raised to believe that whatever the community needs is paramount, and she has taken that mentality—that ethic—into her career. A licensed architect, her fingerprints are on several local structures, including ChildSafe on the Eastside.
But a few years ago, Siboney transitioned her work to focus on community full-time: She serves as the community engagement administrator for the City of San Antonio’s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department.
Siboney shared her story and perspective with us at Third Thursday.
