The H. E. Butt Foundation’s Know Your Neighbor campaign aims to answer an age-old question: “Who is my neighbor?” Through storytelling, developing learning resources, and crafting unique events and experiences, we strive to tell a more accurate story about the economic challenges and gaps in opportunity that exist in our city, inspiring San Antonians to know and care for each other.
San Antonio families are smart, talented, and resourceful, and they work hard to support themselves and their communities. Yet, the economic struggles that many face are too difficult for any one person, organization, or institution to solve. To understand where to make change, we need to understand each other. We need to listen and learn. By nurturing trust and relationships between neighbors across our different sides of town, we can work together to address the challenges facing our city.
With strong relationships as our foundation, we can create solutions that benefit San Antonio children, families, and future generations to come.
The Know Your Neighbor campaign is part of the H. E. Butt Foundation’s deepening Community Engagement work, which seeks to support the regions where we live and work. These initiatives are fresh expressions of long-held commitments: from the Foundation’s earliest days, we have sought to overcome obstacles to health and wellbeing in our communities.
The H. E. Butt Foundation is a faith-based organization rooted in Christianity, and the commitment of “neighboring” is also at the heart of the gospel. The conviction to see, know, and connect with our neighbors is embedded in the story Jesus told when he was asked, “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:25–37). Our faith calls us into relationships with others.
We’re working with community partners across San Antonio to showcase the strengths and better understand the challenges of neighborhoods across our city.
